Jean Lafitte - the pirate who became a famous patriot, then turned back to piracy again - is one of the most extraordinary of them all. He gambled with fate in the Louisiana Bayous and the Vieux Carre. Down on bayou Barataria is the town of Lafitte, named for the pirate.
At the helm narrating is Captain Cyrus Blanchard born and raised on the bayous. He is a Cajun French speaking gentleman and will share his many on hand experiences of the wetland of South Louisiana with you. His expertise of the surroundings is far more than learned in books, he lives it everyday!

After a short ride in our vans or your car, you will venture into the barataria swamps and wetlands. This was the home of the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte, where he lived and buried his treasures.
You will experience "A Step Back in Time." You will see the Cajun of the Bayou living and surviving in harmony with the swamps. Here, the water-ways are their highways.
From the relaxed comfort of our covered Swamp Tour Boats, we will drift slowly past a 2000 year old Indian Burial Mound, a Cajun Cemetery, and Fishing Village! You may see the wildlife that make the Barataria Swamps the Crown Jewel of the Louisiana Purchase. Here, birds, snakes, turtles, fur animals, and Gators are commonly seen! Gators are the king of the swamps and easily spotted in Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Yes, Gators hibernate during the cold winter months, but lay on the bayou banks on warmer days. So even in Winter, our native Captains can sometimes find a sunning Gator on our tour.

WILDLIFE
Numerous animals inhabit the Honey Island Swamp lands. Depending on the season, you may see alligators, deer, a variety of exotic waterfowl, black bears, wild boar, various fish species, and much more.
Currently the Honey Island Swamp is home to a bald eagle's nest and occasionally there are sightings of the Florida cougar. And remember...You can safely view all of the wildlife from the tour boat.

Unfortunately the swamp may be in peril. There have been recurrent efforts to alter the Pearl River for commercial use. If these groups are successful, the Pearl River system may be permanently damaged resulting in the loss of precious wildlife and a thriving ecosystem. LOCAL CULTURE AND HISTORY
The Honey Island Swamp/Pearl River system is known for its interesting people and history. The pirate, Jean Lafitte, was rumored to have hidden some of his treasure in the region. People have also reported sighting a man-like monster similar to a sasquatch that roams the swamp's waterways.
DAY AND NIGHT TOURS AVAILABLE
We offer two types of tours. The day tours offer a scenic view of the swamp land and waterways. Each tour lasts about 2 hours and runs daily.
At night, an entirely different variety of wildlife are active. Alligator and frog, species are generally more accessible at night.

At Pearl River Eco-Tours, our Coast Guard certified guides provide and exciting tour that is fun for everyone. Owner/Operator Neil Benson is a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management. Captain Benson has over 15 years of hands of experience in the wilderness and has been taking guests into the Honey Island Swamp for more than 10 years.
Our guides are professionally educated and are experts on the swamp land ecosystem and history. Moreover, our guides are native to the area and provide a local flair that sets us apart.
