Built in 1787, Destrehan is the oldest documented plantation house left intact in the lower Mississippi Valley.

In 1792, Jean Noel Destrehan, the son of a French aristocrat statesman, acquired from the estate of his father-in-law, robin de Logny, the plantation and stately antebellum home built in the early Louisiana Colonial Style.  Jean Noel, himself a statesman, embellished the home by adding twin wings on either side in 1810.

He and his brother-in-law, Etienne de Bore', first mayor of New Orleans, perfected the granulation of sugar; thereby starting an industry that proved to be most profitable to Louisiana planters.

Around 1830-40 a major renovation was undertaken changing the facade and interior to the Greek Revival Style.

The hand-hewn cypress timbers, pegged attic and bousillage-entre-poteau construction and West Indies style roof are unique features of Destrehan
