"OFF THE BEATEN PATH" TOUR

RIVER ROAD PLANTATION TOUR

Visit two beautiful plantations, San Francisco, "The Most Opulent House on the River," and Houmas House, " The Crown Jewel of Louisiana's River Road.

Your licensed guide will take you back in time as you pass several antebellum plantation homes surrounded by massive oaks, sugar cane fields, pecan groves and Louisiana countryside.

You'll be impressed by the panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain as you cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway (the flood outlet of the Mississippi River).

Your first stop is San Francisco Plantation, built in 1856, the most distinctive and authentically restored plantation on River Road.  Every effort was made to fully restore the house to its most elegant period, circa 1860.  It features five artistically hand painted ceilings, faux marbling and faux wood graining throughout, and antique furniture by master craftsman John Henry.

Next you will tour beautiful Houmas House Plantation and Gardens. Set on twelve acres of lush Louisiana plant life and ancient oak trees, this magnificent plantation has been refurbished with period antiques, fixtures and furnishings from the 1800's a time of glory for the Southern Plantations.

Houmas House has bee featured in historic literature and film, such as novel "North and South," and " Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" starring Bette Davis.  One room in the house is dedicated to Ms. Davis, complete with photos and memorabilia from her filming and stay at the plantation.

DESTREHAN PLANTATION

Be treated to a demonstration of skills that were vital to life on a working plantation!

Destrehan was established in 1787 and remains the oldest documented plantation home in the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Originally built in the French Colonial style, it was remodeled to the Greek Revival style in 1840.

In 1864 the Union Army seized the house and established the Rost Home Colony for the purpose of teaching trade skills to newly freed slaves.

Costumed Artisans will treat you to demonstrations of long forgotten skills that were vital to every day life on the plantation.

The demonstrations rotate daily and may include: Open hearth cooking, candle making, indigo dyeing, bousillage, weaving, carpentry,  or African American herbal remedies.

It's the real story of plantation life!
